Ahriman: Ahura Mazda’s antagonist who is a spirit of darkness and evil in Zoroastrianism.

Ahura Mazda: The Supreme Being represented as a deity of goodness and light in Zoroastrianism.

Ajung Chakra: Chakra center located in the forehead. See Kutatsha.

Allah: The Supreme Being.

Amulet: A charm or anything used to protect the wearer against evil. Often amulets are Divinely Created and Divinely-sent to the recepient.

Anahata Chakra: The fourth chakra, situated in the spine.

Ananda: Bliss, eternal Tranquility, eternal Joy.

Ana-ska'tee: (Cherokee) May, "Planting month".

Angel: A spiritual being superior to man in power and intelligence. An attending spirit, guide, or guardian. See Celestial Hierarchy.

Aravana Sakthi: The veiling power of the mind. The subtlest of all impurities that clouds the pure consciousness of the Soul (Self) and produces body consciousness. Vendantic meditation and inquiry into the true identity of the Soul (Self) removes avarana sakthi.

Archangel: A chief Angel. An order of Angels (see Celestial Hierarchy).

Aryavarta: An ancient name for India.

Asamsaktha: Being unaffected by anything (a meditative state/goal).

Asamsaktha: Being unaffected by anything.

Asanas: meditative postures and cultural postures for body control. See Hatha Yoga.

Ascetic: Practicing strict self-denial as a measure of personal and spiritual discipline.

Asga Ya Galun Lati: (Cherokee) "the Great Spirit".

Ashram: Hermitage.

Astrology: The use of astronomical phenomena to predict earthly and human events.

Asura: A demon or nondevotee.

Aswadha: The sense world in which one produces good or bad (evil) actions and creates Karma. (As long as a soul is not interested in enjoying the fruits of their actions, the law of Karma does not bind it.

Ateist (Hebrew) Atheist.

Atiyosdi: (Cherokee) "disagreement, argument".

Atman: Soul, The Self, spirit, or pure consciousness.

Augur: To foretell or predict the future.

Augury: Divination from omens or portents or chance events, such as the fall of lots.

Aura: The distinctive atmosphere surrounding a given source. Human auras can reveal characteristics about their subjects. Auras can be photographed through a special process.

Aureole: A radiant light around the head or body of a sacred personage. Halo. See aura.

Avatar: An incarnation of The Lord.

Avesta: The book of the sacred writings of Zoroastrianism.

Avidya: Ignorance, delusion.

Baba: Father, Master, Guru.

Babaji: Reverend Father, Spiritual Master, Guru.

Bayit: Bet; (Hebrew) Communal House.

Bet Knesset: (Hebrew) Temle of the Gathering.

Bet Mikdash: (Hebrew) Holy Temple.

Bet Mikdash: (Hebrew) Holy Temple.

Bhagavad Gita: Hindu Holy Book composed of Lord Krishna’s teachings to Arjuna.

Bhagavad Gita: Hindu Holy Scriptures detailing the spiritual instructions given by Krishna to His friend, Arjuna, on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra.

Bhagavata: Hindu Holy Scriptures detailing Krishna’s life and teachings and explaining the incarnations of Vishnu and and Hindu philosophy.

Bhakta: Devotee.

Bhakti Yoga: The Yoga Path of devotional service to the Lord.

Bhakti: Seeing inner visions. Literally it means love and devotion.

Bhutas: The five elements: earth, fire, water, air, and ether.

Bideha Mukta: One who attains liberation after the physical body has dropped off.

Bijnan: (Literally, "science"). Absolute Knowledge, eternal Realization.

Bindu: (Literally, "spot"). The bright star of Consciousness, seen between the eyebrows.

Brahma: The Creator; part of the Hindu sacred triad of God: Brahma, Vishnu, Siva.

Brahmacharya: (Literally "celibate"). One who lives in inwardness, a monastic; a celibate student under the guidance of a spiritual master.

Brahman/Brahmin: The Absolute. In Hindu Scriptures, The One Absolute Being from whom everything emanates. Also, traditionally one from the priesthood.

Brahmanism: Orthodox Hinduism adhering to the pantheism of the Vedas.

Buddha/Gautama Buddha: Prince Siddhartha, Indian Prince circa 563-483 BC Founder of Buddhism.

Buddhahood: A state of perfect enlightenment sought in Buddhism.

Buddhi: Wisdom.

Buddhism: A religion growing out of the teaching of Gautama Buddha (Indian Prince Siddhartha) that suffering is in inherent in life and that one can be liberated from it by mental and moral purification.

Celestial Hierarchy: A traditional hierarchy of angels ranked from lowest to highest into the following nine orders: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Powers, Virtues, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim.

Chaim: (Hebrew) Life.

Chakras: The 6 plexuses or astral centers located in the spine, which are storage centers for Pranic energy.

Chasuble: A sleeveless outer vestment worn by the officiating priest at mass.

Chava: (Hebrew) Eve

Chela: Disciple.

Chit: Awareness, feeling, consciousness.

Chitha: The subconscious mind.

Christianity: The religion derived from the teachings of Jesus Christ, based on the Bible as sacred scripture and professed by Eastern, Roman Catholic, and Protestant bodies.

Christmas: A Christian feast on December 25 (or January 6 for the Eastern Orthodox Church) that commemorates the birth of Jesus.

Cohanim: (Hebrew) In ancient times, Cohanim (all Cohen) were priests.

Guru: (Literally- That which dispels darkenss.) A Spiritual Teacher. Often this relationship is cemented when a guru bestows meditation technique upon a devotee in an initiation ceremony. Some believe the connection between a Guru and a devotee (disciple) lasts until the devotee achieves spiritual emancipation from duality.

Joss Stick: A slender stick of incense burned in front of a joss.

Krishna: A Deity of Hinduism worshipped as an incarnation of Vishnu.

Kriya Yoga: A series of asanas, recharging exercises, and meditation techniques which lead to the ultimate liberation (Realization) of the Divine Nature of the Self (Soul).

Kriya Yoga: Meditation technique for God-realization.

Kriya: (literally) Cleansing Process.

Kumbha Mela: Large religious festival in India attended by numerous devotees and ascetics.

Kundalini Yoga: A branch of Raja Yoga.

Kutastha Chaitanya: The Christ (Krishna) Consciousness center located at the point between the eyebrows.

Kutatsha: Chakra located between the eyebrows.

Kwan Yin: Chinese personification of the Divine Mother.

Lalla Yogiswara: "Supreme Mistress of Yoga". Lalla, a Shiva devotee, lived in the 14th century and is one of the patron saints of Kashmir.

Lam: A root syllable (see Mantra Sastras); name of the gross matter or earth principle.

Lamaism: The Mahayana Buddhism of Tibet and Mongolia marked by tantric and shamanistic ritual and a dominant monastic hierarchy headed by the Dalai Lama.

Lila: The Divine Play, God’s Play, beyond understanding through intellect and reason.

Mandir: Temple.

Manipura Chakra: Chakra located near the lumbar region of the spine.

Mantra Sastras: The books dealing with mystical syllables, often used in repetitive prayer or chanting, such as "Aum".

Mantra: A holy mystical symbol or name of God chanted or repeated mentally.

Mantra: A potent chant.

Mantra: Vibration of Mystic syllables or letters that free the mind from attachment or distraction.

Mauna: Spiritual silence.

Maya (Maya Sakthi): The illusion (power) which veils the consciousness and brings individuality.

Maya: Cosmic delusion.

Maya: Illusion. Restless breath.

Mazel: (Hebrew) Luck.

Medicine Animal: Animal or animal spirit/nature that helps one through their spiritual journey.

Michael: One of the best known archangels.

Mincha: (Hebrew) Afternoon Prayer.

Moda: Great Joy.

Monsignor: A prelate of the Roman Catholic Church having a dignity or titular distinction usually conferred by the pope.

Montanism/Montanist: A Christian sect arising in the late second century and stressing apocalyptic expectations, the continuing prophetic gifts of the Spirit, and strict ascetic discipline.

Mudras: Hatha Yoga postures that produce beneficial electric currents or forces in the body.

Muhammad: (570-632) Arab Prophet and Founder of Islam.

Muhammadan calendar: A lunar calendar reckoned from the Hegira in A.D. 622 and organized into cycles of 30 years.

Muharram: The 1st month of the Muhammadan year. Also a Muslim feast held during Muharram.

Mukti: Liberation.

Muladhara Chakra: The lotus or pelvic plexus located in the lower spine.

Naga Vayu: A manifestation of Prana, the vital force.

Nirmanu: The Yogic method of cleansing the body in order to achieve perfection in breathing exercises.

Nirvana: The final beatitude that transcends suffering, karma, and samsara and is sought especially by Buddhists through the extinction of desire and individual consciousness.

Niyama: From Patanjali’s Eightfold Path, religious observances, such as cleanliness, contentment, mortification, study, and worship of Spirit.

Om (Aum): The sacred symbol in Hindu Philosophy. Part of the Holy Trinity: Sat, Tat, Aum. A sacred symbol for God. Often used at the end of a prayer, similar to "Amen."

Ourielle: One of the four best known archangels. Sometimes spelled Uriel.

Padmasana: In Hatha Yoga, the lotus posture.

Pantheism: A doctrine that equates God with the forces and laws of the Universe. Also, toleration of the worship of any aspect of God.

Parama Siva: Supreme Being.

Paramguru: Guru of one’s guru.

Parardha: The time measurement to denote the creation and dissolution of the cosmos by Brahma.

Pararthabhavina: Meditative state where external things do not appear to exist.

Parvati: An aspect of Jaganmatri—"Divine Mother of the World".

Pingala: A subtle tube; an astral counterpart or sensory and motor fibers in the spinal column through which the nerve current (Prana) travels.

Pitrs: Spirits of the dead. Gods of the lower world.

Pons asinorum: A critical test of ability imposed upon the inexperienced or ignorant.

Pope: A prelate who as bishop of Rome is the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Prakrit: Nature; the unmanifest universe.

Prakriti: The restless characteristic of the mind or the breath.

Pramoda: The greatest joy.

Prana: Vital energy and vital air (breath).

Pranava: The sacred syllable Aum (Om); that which pervades life or runs through Prana (breath).

Pranayama: Breathing exercises; breath control.

Pranic energy: Life force.

Prathyahara: Withdrawl of the sense from objects; making the mind introspective.

Premavatar: Incarnation of Love.

Priya: Joy.

Pronam: To salute or bow down, especially before respected persons or monastics.

Prophet: One who utters divinely inspired revelations.

Purna: Whole.

Raja Yoga: The Royal Yoga Path…the science of mental control.

Raja/Rajah: The bearer of a title of nobility among Hindus.

Raja: Illumination, Radiant Self (Soul).

Rajab: the 7th month of the Muhammadan year.

Rakini Devi: The Sakthi, or the power of the Swadishtana Chakra (the second plexus in the spine).

Ram: The root syllable and name for fire.

Rama: A Deity of Hinduism worshipped as an avatar of Vishnu.

Ramadan: the 9th month of the Muhammadan year observed as sacred with fasting practiced from dawn to sunset.

Ramayana: An ancient epic.

Rani/Ranee: A Hindu queen, a rajah’s wife.
