Hatha Yoga is a form of yoga
which gives first attention to the physical body. The word Hatha is composed of the
syllables Ha and Tha, which mean sun and moon. Yoga means "union".
The physical body is the vehicle of the soul's activity and existence. In
order to obtain purity of the mind, one must purify the body. Hatha Yoga utilizes the
practice of physical poses known as "Asanas" and "Pranayama" (breath
control) to assist the practitioner in obtaining self-control over the mind. Hatha Yoga
assist the mind in becoming one pointed and allows quick progression in concentration,
meditation, and ultimate oneness with Brahman (God, The Absolute).
There are many great Hatha Yoga teachers and
institutes throughout the world. The best book we have ever seen on this subject is
written by Swami Vishnudevananda. This book not only explains the
intricacies of Hatha
Yoga, it gives detailed instructions and suggestions for use with one's spiritual path.

Our first introduction to Hatha Yoga came a few decades ago.
Lilias Folan did a half hour PBS television show teaching Hatha Yoga to those with no
previous experience whatsoever. Originally Lilias wrote an illustrated book detailing
beginning Asanas. If you can find this book in a used book store or from
Amazon.COM, get
it! Recently, Lilias has published several video tapes on Hatha Yoga. Her approach is
concise and devoted, yet geared towards the beginner.
